As an Intern, you can expect to:    

  • Join Southwest as a Summer 2024 Intern, with a 12-week internship lasting from May 21 to August 9, 2024. 

  • Work onsite at our Corporate Campus in Dallas, TX. 

  • Workplace flexibility for 50% of the time is typically available, but interns are expected to be onsite for Intern-related events.  

  • Dedicate 40 hours each week to your internship responsibilities and tasks.  

  • Receive hourly pay of $22 and receive a one-time $1,000 stipend on your first paycheck.  

  • Receive free, unlimited space available travel privileges for yourself (taxes and fees may apply on international travel). 

  • Interns will be provided any required equipment, such as a laptop, for the internship.

Southwest Airlines' Marketing Internships span across several different Teams within Marketing and Travel Products. Interns may be asked to support a variety of projects within one or more of the following Teams (details on each team are below):  

  • Marketing Strategy Team 

  • Vacations Customer Operations Team 

  • Brand Engagement and Governance Team 

  • Brand Communications Team 

  • Digital Experience Solutions Team 

The Marketing Strategy Team: 

This department is responsible for the overall direction and execution of all Marketing and go-to-market (GTM) Strategy efforts in support of the business needs within multiple functional areas such as Local Strategy, Customer Development, Traffic, Southwest Business, and Southwest Vacations. 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

The duties and responsibilities of the Marketing Strategy Intern may include, but are not limited to:  

  • Participate in Go-to-market (GTM) strategies across the Local, Customer Development, Traffic, Southwest Business, and Southwest Vacations teams. Compile and analyze data on brand health, demand patterns, Customer mix, and marketing trends to then present findings back to the Team and/or Marketing Department. 

  • Create a Go-to-market (GTM) brief for a current business need highlighting an overall strategy to execute. 

  • Communicate and collaborate with Team Members on Strategic development. 

Attend cross-departmental and cross-functional meetings. 

  • Interest in analyzing data; ability to learn new tools for analyzing data preferred. 

  • Interest in communication; ability to create and tell a story from data preferred.  

The Vacations Customer Operations Team:  

This department is responsible for creating and offering bundled vacation packages with the best overall value for the Customer while extending our Southwest hospitality across the Customer travel journey. 

Duties and Responsibilities:  

The duties and responsibilities of the Vacations Customer Operations Intern may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Executing an impactful project for the Vacations Team with potential topics such as policies and procedures recommendations, training development, testing and optimization recommendations, Customer data/ experience analysis, content development, or planning for key product enhancements. 

  • Research the competition and produce benchmarking materials.  

  • Attend cross-functional meetings and assist with daily tasks such as data collecting and reporting, developing presentations, documenting activities, and other projects as needed. 

  • Serving as the liaison with multiple internal Teams. 

  • Interest in conducting competitive research preferred 

  • Interest and/or experience with documenting procedures or creative writing preferred 

  • Interest in hospitality and/or product creation preferred  

The Brand Governance and Engagement Team: 

This team’s goal is to physically manifest Southwest Airlines’ values, campaigns, and Hospitality by creating human touchpoints, activations, and content to give Customers the opportunity to feel and experience the Southwest Brand outside of the airport and as part of their lifestyle.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The duties and responsibilities of the Brand Governance and Engagement Intern may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Developing and fulfilling promotions/sweepstakes.  

  • Drafting letters of agreement.  

  • Supporting activation execution.  

  • Sourcing brand premium items.  

  • Routing creative and legal documents for approvals.  

  • Conducting market and competitive research.  

  • Leading Customer outreach for events.  

  • Contributing to the strategy of current promotional activities.  

  • Responding to partnership/sponsorship inquiries.  

  • Scheduling meetings and managing office administrative duties assigned by Leadership such as putting together decks for Executive Meetings and taking notes to keep teams informed and connected.  

  • Attending meetings and working collaboratively with cross-functional Teams across the organization in order to achieve project objectives.  

  • Completing other ad hoc tasks as assigned by Leadership.   

  • Possibility of travel for projects and events. 

  • Experience with sweepstakes, promotions, or Brand Ambassador preferred. 

  • Involvement in formulating a strategy for events or promotions preferred. 

The Brand Communications Team: 

This department works with creative agency partners, social content partners, station co-ops, and internal creative designers and writers to develop cohesive and memorable advertising campaigns to support commercial objectives while driving the Brand. The Creative Brand Team works on creative executions for local markets, upper funnel initiatives, CX projects such as menus and napkins, and specialty projects. The Team partners across the organization and with our external partners to ensure Brand standards and consistency are met for all Customer-facing communication points. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The duties and responsibilities of the Brand Communication Intern may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Collaborate with internal creative teams and advertising agency teams to develop and execute advertising campaigns for national and local initiatives. 

  • Intake, coordinate, assemble and communicate requirements for projects while working with team members.  

  • Support team members in managing projects to ensure deliverables are completed on time and within scope.  

  • Attend creative reviews to ensure that all assets ladder up to the Southwest brand vision and voice, adheres to our brand standards and guidelines, and strategically aligns with business priorities. 

  • Help develop creative briefs that clearly outline expectations for creative teams. 

  • Provide comprehensive recaps and notes from meetings, outlining next steps and roles and responsibilities. 

  • Assist in developing presentations decks creative work to key stakeholders to share point of view and gain alignment and approvals. 

  • Help develop and maintain “war room” to showcase creative work already produced along various lines of businesses. 

  • Maintain constant and concise communication of assigned marketing-related programming with internal and external partners. 

  • Participate in ad hoc projects and brainstorming sessions. 

  • Manage small and medium requests for go-to-market teams.  

  • Relevant coursework such as media planning, ad campaigns, ad research, ad planning, or creative development is preferred.  

  • Previous internship or work experience in an advertising agency, or for a client is preferred.   

  • Experience creating strategy for advertising campaigns preferred.   

Digital Experience Solutions Team 

This team provides technology solutions to the organization enabling capabilities and features to enhance our Customer digital communication channels. The Intern will support projects that improve the Customer Experience throughout the travel journey.  

Duties and Responsibilities: 

The duties and responsibilities of the Digital Product Intern may include, but are not limited to: 

  • Foster cross-functional relationships to build digital project requirements. 

  • Ensure that projects are moving forward, and project statuses are delivered. 

  • Analyze data collected throughout the customer journey to inform future strategies. 

  • Attend and participate in cross-functional meetings.   

  • Work closely with other Departments within Southwest Airlines.  

  • Some travel possible. 

  • Coordinate communication efforts and support administrative needs as necessary 

Basic Qualifications: 

  • High School Diploma, GED or equivalent education required.  

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.   

  • Must have authorization to work in the United States as defined by the Immigration Reform Act of 1986.  

  • You must have a valid U.S. Social Security Number to complete the full hiring process.   

Education: 

  • Progress towards degree, major/minor in Marketing, Business, Innovation, Entrepreneurship, Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, Communications, Hospitality, Economics, or related degree

  • Minimum sophomore status. May not have an undergraduate graduation date of May 2024 or prior, unless already enrolled in a full-time graduate degree program at time of application.   

  • To be eligible, you must be currently enrolled as a full-time student as defined by your university at the time of application. 

  • Maintained 2.5 or above cumulative GPA at the time of application submission. 

Experience: 

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications (Word, Excel, PPT) is required. 

  • Previous work experience or internship is preferred. 

  • On-campus leadership experience is preferred.  

  • Experience managing a project from conception to completion or building project requirements documents is preferred. 

Knowledge, Skills, Work Style and Abilities: 

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 

  • Ability to show initiative and be a self-starter. 

  • Ability to work independently and the willingness to function as a part of a Team. 

  • Ability to coordinate multiple tasks and complete assignments with tight deadlines. 

  • Must be detailed oriented. 

  • Must maintain a professional appearance and attitude. 

  • Must be able to maintain confidential information. 

  • Must be willing to contribute during brainstorming sessions, and actively participate from concept to execution. 

Time Commitment and Pay: 

  • Required: Full-time 40hrs a week  

  • Must maintain a consistent weekly schedule during normal business hours at a max of 8hrs per day.   

  • You must reside in Dallas, TX during the internship and work a hybrid schedule of at least 50% in office and be onsite for applicable intern events.   

  • Program Dates: May 21st – August 9th, 2024  

  • $22 per hour + $1,000 stipend paid one time on first paycheck.
