At the College of Merchandising, Hospitality, and Tourism (CMHT), student assistants like Renolds Kusi and Bappy Aminul Islam exemplify the transformative power of hands-on experience in shaping academic and professional aspirations. Here’s a glimpse into their journeys, insights, and advice for future student assistants.

Renolds Kusi: Passion for Hospitality and Mentorship
Renolds Kusi, a master’s student in Hospitality Management, credits his six years of experience in Ghana's hospitality and tourism industry as the driving force behind his pursuit of advanced studies. His roles, ranging from hotel staff to travel consultant, ignited his passion for expanding his knowledge and skills in the field.
One of Renolds' most memorable experiences as a student assistant came when he worked as a “Menus of Change Fellow” for UNT's food-wise project. “Contributing to the dining services' knowledge through field studies was both humbling and impactful,” he shared. Beyond this, daily interactions with esteemed faculty members inspire him, affirming his vision of becoming a professor.
Renolds also treasures everyday moments at The Nest, where he draws inspiration from
faculty members. “It’s such a priceless moment, sitting in The Nest, admiring great faculty members
pass by and, if I’m lucky, receiving a ‘Hi!’”
In his role, Renolds has honed research and teaching skills, such as conducting literature
reviews, preparing course materials, and improving communication and critical thinking
abilities. His hands-on experience at Club Gateway has further equipped him with restaurant
management skills, adding a practical dimension to his academic journey. “Student assistantship is like an apprenticeship for my future career,” Renolds explains.
His advice to future student assistants? “Define your goals, embrace flexibility, and serve with diligence and commitment. This opportunity can shape your future.”

Bappy Aminul Islam: Bridging Data and Merchandising
Hailing from Bangladesh, Bappy Aminul Islam is pursuing his master’s in Merchandising
and Consumer Analytics. With a background in Textile Engineering and experience in
the apparel industry as an Industrial Engineer, Bappy discovered his passion for data
analysis and visualization, steering him toward his current field.
For Bappy, an unforgettable moment came early in his Teaching Assistant role when
he accidentally released student grades prematurely. I wasn’t sure how to handle the situation,” he recalls. “So I paused the grading and immediately emailed my supervisor to explain. It taught
me the importance of clear communication and staying calm under pressure.”
Through his responsibilities—grading assignments, facilitating class activities, and preparing study materials—Bappy has developed strong time management, communication, and decision-making skills. “These skills have not only helped me manage my academic workload but will also be crucial in my future career as a marketing or business analyst,” he explains.
His advice for future student assistants? “Never hesitate to ask questions, even if it’s multiple times. Clear communication is key to avoiding mistakes and ensuring success.”
A Foundation for the Future
Both Renolds and Bappy exemplify how student assistant roles at CMHT serve as platforms
for growth, enabling students to refine their skills, explore their passions, and
prepare for future success. Their stories highlight the importance of mentorship,
dedication, and seizing every opportunity to learn and contribute.
For aspiring student assistants, their journeys serve as a reminder: define your purpose, embrace challenges, and let every experience pave the way to your dreams.
