David Matthews, an advisory board member of the College of Merchandising, Hospitality & Tourism and Managing Director of RevTech Ventures, is deeply invested in helping students shape their careers. His commitment to giving back is evident through his pivotal role in establishing this scholarship, which offers not only financial support but also a career-defining internship opportunity.
Through the Deborah Weinswig Scholarship, Weinswig’s impact continues to resonate as she empowers students like Hiromichi Suzuki, who have shown tremendous promise in the rapidly evolving digital retail landscape. As the scholarship’s recipient, Hiromichi will have the chance to intern with Coresight Research, an organization dedicated to fostering talent and innovation in the retail sector. As Vice President of NRFSA, Hiromichi has been deeply involved in creating opportunities for students, and the experience has been immensely fulfilling. "Working with other officers, who are hardworking, kind, and open-minded, truly inspires me," he shares. Through his roles in NRFSA and as a Student Ambassador, Hiromichi found joy in helping others and contributing to the community.
The most memorable experience so far, was participating in the NRF Foundation Student Program in NYC. Despite initial challenges, Hiromichi learned valuable lessons. " I identified areas for growth, particularly in communication, leadership, and self-initiative. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, and I know it will help me succeed in the industry." Malini Ratnam, faculty advisor of NRFSA adds that “The NRF Big Show in New York City is a transformative experience for students,” Ms. Ratnam noted. “It provides unparalleled access to industry leaders and opens doors to incredible career opportunities.” Hiro’s journey in the NRF Challenge also underscores the value of experiential learning. Ms. Ratnam emphasized its impact on students: “This competition equips them with skills and connections that give them a significant edge in the competitive job market. It’s a privilege to mentor such talented individuals and see them excel.”
One of their standout moments came this summer when he challenged themselves with his first FSF case study. "In the beginning, I felt the requirements were difficult and struggled in the research process," he admits. "However, as the process progressed, I gained confidence and truly came to enjoy the case study. I’m proud that I completed my case study, essay, and personal branding video to perfection." Dr. Jana Hawley, a seasoned FSF Faculty Advisor, commends Hiro’s character and dedication, noting, “He consistently sets a high bar for himself and exceeds his own expectations.
His active participation in student organizations and college initiatives has honed his leadership and time management skills, making him a standout among his peers and faculty.” Hiro’s involvement in the FSF isn’t just about competition; it’s about growth. Dr. Hawley highlights that FSF Scholars gain access to unparalleled opportunities, from networking with industry leaders to internships with dream companies. For Hiro, it’s an important milestone in his journey to becoming a trailblazer in digital retailing and marketing.
As for the future, Hiromichi has a clear vision of their career path. "I’m now focused on digital retailing, which has been a passion of mine since I was younger. After meeting with NRFSA members and faculty at the NRF Foundation Student Program, I realized this interest hasn’t faded. I’m looking for a job that combines digital retailing and marketing, ideally one that allows me to tap into my creativity, which is why I graduated from fashion school in Tokyo." His ultimate goal is to be a professional who merges knowledge in digital retailing, marketing, and merchandising with a creative flair. "I want to apply my creativity to brand campaigns, blending the worlds of commerce and artistic creation," he concludes.
A heartfelt thank you to both David Matthews and Deborah Weinswig for their generosity and dedication to supporting the future of retail. Their contributions are making a lasting difference in the lives of students and the retail industry at large.
