UNT Master's Program Launches 2nd Sustainable Cohort to Costa Rica
July 03, 2012

UNT's Master of Science in International Sustainable Tourism (MIST) successfully landed its 2nd cohort in Costa Rica June 1, only weeks after the 1st MIST cohort walked across the UNT stage at graduation. These nine students are now exploring the jungles and beaches of Costa Rica to observe, research, and develop sustainable practices for local communities as well as the hospitality and tourism industry as a whole.

The MIST program is the first of its kind in the US. Students pursuing this joint master's degree complete the first year of study on the UNT campus and the second year in CATIE, Costa Rica. This degree program teaches graduates to able to meet the needs of tourism markets of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Current MIST student Erin Davis explained, "I am able to see first-hand how to implement sustainable tourism and development for communities similar to Costa Rica, which are found world-wide. I have also re-discovered an appreciation for organic fruits and vegetables and a healthier way of life for myself and the planet." She, along with the other graduate students in the MIST program, gain knowledge of not only sustainable theory, but "green practice" implementations in this unique second year in Costa Rica.
