CMHT's Merchandising, Inc. organization offers opportunity for students to employ skills and abilities to plan, manage, and produce the annual fashion show
April 10, 2012

Alexis Linthicum, Merchandising, Inc. President, Kevin Ross and Emily Hoffman, Fashion Show Producers have released details of the upcoming annual fashion show "Flashin' Back in Fashion" that will highlight decade themes from the 1920s to current today. It will be held on Friday, April 20, 7:00 pm in UNT Union's Silver Eagle Suite. Tickets are $5 pre-sale from any Merchandise, Inc. member or $8 at the door. Two special additions to this year's show include a pre-show and a raffle. The pre-show is a preview of UNT-branded merchandise that is available in the bookstore and at local Denton area merchants. Raffle ticket proceeds will benefit Attitudes and AttireTM a nonprofit agency dedicated to promoting personal growth for women seeking self-sufficiency. This program is housed in Dallas Market Center and assists women who are returning to the workforce through a variety of training sessions, interview practice, professional work and appearance and image assistance. This is one of key philanthropic events in which Merchandising, Inc. members participate. Students volunteer in organizing professional clothing and styling women each year.

The main event of the fashion show will also feature a competition for stylists who are will create the various looks for several models. Judges will rate the stylists on historical accuracy of the decades and creative interpretation of the overall look. In the call for models this year Merchandising, Inc. reached out the UNT community. Many of the models are student athletes, RAs, and academic scholars. Sterling Fry Street, new student apartments near campus, is one of the primary sponsors of the event providing assistance with advertisements and promotions. Student organizers of the show worked with product vendors including Circa 77 in Denton and Dillard's at Vista Ridge Mall to secure apparel and accessories.

This event is a great example of learning outside of the classroom and helps to create another opportunity for students to problem-solve, develop relationships with the industry, realize and overcome difficulties, and participate in cooperative work with students from a variety of majors.

Students feel that Mrs. Zorola has been instrumental in leading them through this process of learning to organize, produce, and manage the components of a fast-paced fashion show in order to bring this anticipated event to the university and the greater Denton community.
