Annual Merchandising EXPO Connects Students and Professionals
April 09, 2012

Merchandising students and industry professionals met and discussed internship and career opportunities at the annual EXPO on February 15, 2012. The event focuses on connecting majors in merchandising, home furnishings merchandising, and digital retail to their potential industry counterparts.

This event has been a fixture for 25 years and has connected countless students and employers. This event is much more than a career fair.  Prior to the afternoon event, employers and select students have the opportunity to begin initial conversations over a casual luncheon, then in a larger setting, employers meet with students in small groups and present company and career information. Students have the opportunity to ask individual questions.  Students who have preregistered may participate in interviews with companies in order to focus on more individual goals of the student and the company.

Students comment that the meetings with the companies expand their knowledge of the industry and give them insight regarding how concepts they are learning in the degree programs integrate into the brands represented at the event.  Professionals share their career paths and encourage students to own their success and to explore all opportunities offered to them.

The event is held yearly in February and registration for companies begins in December of the previous year.  For more information about becoming involved in this event and connecting with students, please contact Dee Wilson atDee.Wilson@unt.edu

Companies participating this year included Arteriors Home, Buckle, Dillard's, Kohl's, Loloi Rugs, Michaels Corporate, PFSweb, Sally Beauty Company, Target, and Zale Corporation. Other companies who have participated previously are Neiman Marcus, Nordstrom, Havertys, Tommy Hilfiger, Toys "R" Us, Tuesday Morning Corporate, Anderson's Furniture, Shepler's Western Wear, Coldwater Creek Corporate, Abercrombie & Fitch, and Barse.

Several employers commented on how pleased they were with the quality of students they spoke with at the Expo.  Several students have already been contacted for follow-up interviews.  Many students receive their internship opportunities directly from contacts made with company representatives at this Expo event.
