Students Apply Merchandising Skills and Set Record Amount for Annual Merchandising Sample Sale
March 06, 2012

On a Thursday morning in the Fall semester, the work of students, staff, faculty, and industry affiliates culminated in a successful sample sale in the UNT Student Union.  In a very short period of time, the Merchandising Department generated over $10,000. All of the proceeds go directly to helping sponsor student travel to professional conferences.

The Merchandising Department partnered with the members of the Merchandising Board of Governors to provide students with an opportunity to make quick decisions, merchandise and display product, interact with customers and generate sales to fund many merchandising-related student activities. This year's product assortment offered more apparel, accessories, and decor than previous years. The Board of Governors facilitated the donations of products and made appearances at the event to encourage students. Companies involved in this event included The Apparel Group, Fossil, Global Views, M&M, Sheplers Western Wear, Toys R Us, Tuesday Morning, and Zales.

Students in a variety of courses worked for several weeks in preparation for this event. The Promotion of Apparel and Home Furnishings class was involved in developing a promotional campaign to aid in campus-wide awareness.  These students pitched exceptional ideas to three industry judges, Carolyn Corporon, VP of Marketing for Beauty Systems Group, Dessires Zarin, Senior Designer at The Apparel Group, and Kelly Killian, Director of Marketing for Wisteria. The judges selected the top ideas which were transformed into unique promotional activities including large-than-life paper mache sculptures of a shoe, sunglasses, and a lamp, which were displayed in strategic areas on campus.  Another group used the theme of picketing to advertise the sale, while still another used live models to draw attention to the sale and its products. The Profit-Centered Merchandising class inventoried and priced over 2,000 items and then organized them by "department." Over 140 student workers helped to promote, sell, and construct the Sample Sale.

Faculty and staff members spent well over a month preparing for the event. Products had to be collected, stored, moved to the Union location, and set for display and sale.

Buyers began lining up early for the 11:00 sale. One student, the first in line, said she had been there since 7:45 AM "waiting for a Fossil watch." This fundraiser is an event that provides another opportunity for students to take an active part in their own learning. For more information about this event, please contact the Merchandising Department Chair, Dr. Tammy Kinley atTammy.Kinley@unt.edu
