Students attend "Big Show," among "Big Names" in retail
February 21, 2012

In January, seven students from CMHT's National Retail Federation Student Association (NRFSA) attended the annual NRF "Big Show" conference in New York City. Since the creation of the NRFSA in Fall 2011, approximately 30 students have joined the chapter. Read more about their experience and the CMHT's NRF Student Chapter.

The four day conference offered students a chance to network, observe, and learn from some of the most prestigious names in the retail industry. January 15th served as a day of "speed networking" where students from NRFSA chapters across the nation spoke with retailer recruiters from Macy's, Tiffany & Co., Saks Fifth Avenue, Build-A-Bear, American Girl, KOHL's, and Dick's Sporting Goods regarding future job and internship possibilities. The "speed networking" portion of the conference gave NRFSA members an exclusive opportunity in a round table setting with leading companies they have studied about throughout their academic careers.

The remaining three days of the conference were spent attending the regular conference sessions, including a speech on "Global Humanity" given by former president Bill Clinton and Macy's Chairman Terry Lundgren. Clinton discussed his foundation and their steady impact on relieving the crisis in Haiti. David Lauren, Executive V.P. of Advertising, Marketing and Communications for his father's fashion empire, Ralph Lauren, was also among the speakers at the Big Show. Lauren discussed the brand's recent advertising innovations, including "Ralph Lauren 4D," and its recent debut in London. In addition, students absorbed trend reports for 2012 from the Doneger Group, heard from social media representatives from brands such as American Eagle and Warby Parker, and were also informed of recent global market hot spot economies such as China and Brazil.

These students shared their learning experiences with their fellow NRFSA members at their first official semester chapter meeting in January. UNT's NRFSA chapter plans to hit the ground running to prepare a solid foundation of principles, ethics, and standards, and name its 2012 officers in February.

Students in the organization submitted applications, a resume, and a short essay detailing their qualifications to attend the conference. Applicants were chosen based on their academic standing, leadership experience, and department involvement. Students were accompanied by professors Dr. Tammy Kinley, Mr. Richard Last, and Mrs. Tatyana Grant.
