Hospitality Management Students Win 1st Place at National Collegiate Green Team Competition
October 31, 2011

The University of North Texas was one of only seven universities who were asked to compete in the first annual Collegiate Green Team Competition sponsored by Wyndham Worldwide Corporation and the American Hotel and Lodging Association (AH&LA). UNT Hospitality Management students won first and fourth place in the competition.

The first place winning team included Ashley Williams, Alexandria Darisse, Nicholas Hernandez, and Richard Dagleish, all of which  are seniors of the Hospitality Management program. The fourth place winner was Christina Morris, a Master of Science in International Sustainable Tourism (MIST) student. First place winners were awarded hotel rooms and food stipends for the AH&LA show in New York City in November 2011.

Over 100 Hospitality Management students in two senior level classes of Facilities Planning, Equipment, Layout and Design (HMGT 4820) completed projects in groups of four during the spring semester.  Also, 21 graduate students in Hotel and Restaurant Operations: Theory and Analysis (SMHM 5280) submitted individual projects.  A committee of three faculty members chose a total of nine projects from the three classes to be considered for submission.  Then, the Chair of the Hospitality Management program, Dr. Lea Dopson, made the final selection of the top five to be sent to Wyndham Sustainability Group for the competition.

The national competition benefits AH&LA members, participating companies, and educational institutions alike.  The competition is meant to further develop content to educate AH&LA members about sustainable practices and programs that can help them green their hotels using social media and online resources. Also, participating companies can use this program to facilitate community engagement and partnerships to enhance sustainability efforts.  Additionally, the competition assists colleges in incorporating green content into their curricula.

Dr. Lea Dopson, Chair of the Hospitality Management program stated, "The Collegiate Green Team Competition allows students, faculty, and industry professionals to engage in meaningful discussions about sustainability issues facing the lodging industry.  The students in UNT's Hospitality and Tourism programs are now more engaged in learning about how they, as managers, will be able to positively impact the world through sustainable practices."
