Sustainable Tourism Research Presented at International Conference in Costa Rica
October 31, 2011

During the first week of October, Dr. Lea Dopson and Dr. Daniel Spears traveled to Costa Rica to present research on sustainable tourism trends at the 2011 Planet, People, Peace (P3) International Conference located in the area of Guacimo, Limon. The Limon region of Costa Rica is of great biological diversity, hosts many tourism attractions, and is home to the campus of EARTH University, which is internationally recognized for its work in the field of sustainable agriculture and environmental conservation.

The annual P3 International Conference, which is sponsored by the National Ecotourism Association CANAECO, was formed to help provide information and stabilization to the challenges of tourism development internationally. The mission of the conference was to create a venue for reflection, consultation, and the interchange of ideas for the future of sustainable tourism. Four principle themes presented during the conference, Water, Earth, Fire and Air, focused on the cultural pillar of sustainability. "I really enjoyed attending this conference. The presentations and discussions were especially productive because the key participants were both public and private entities that direct and provide sustainable tourism," stated Dr. Dopson.  See a video on the 2010 Planet, People, Peace International Conference.

The University of North Texas' M.S. in International Sustainable Tourism (MIST) Program was an exhibitor at the P3 conference. Students from the MIST Program traveled from Turrialba, Costa Rica, where they are currently studying at CATIE International Research and Education Center.  The MIST program is a joint degree in which students spend the first year of the program at the University of North Texas and the second year at CATIE in Costa Rica.  Follow this link for more information on the MIST program.
