Hospitality Management Students Study Abroad in Hong Kong/China Summer 2011
July 20, 2011

Dr. Zheng "Phil" Xiang accompanied nine undergraduate students on the second annual UNT Hospitality Management Study Abroad trip to China. The purpose of the trip was to expose students to recent developments in international tourism.

In order to understand the growth and development of tourism, students visited companies such as the Overseas Chinese Town, one of the largest theme park and hotel/resort developers in China which hosts the Splendid China Theme Park in Shenzhen and the Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) Headquarters in Shanghai. Also, the group visited a number of tourist attractions in Hong Kong, an ancient water town and the Bund in Shanghai, ancient gardens in Suzhou, the West Lake in Hangzhou, as well as many cultural sites in Beijing, capital of China, including the Great Wall, the Forbidden City, and the Summer Palace. This trip also included cultural exchange activities such as acrobatic and Kung-fu performances, visits to tourism programs in Chinese universities, as well as interactions with local families in Beijing.

According to Dr. Xiang, "in the past thirty years, development has been the dominant theme for China as a nation making transition into modernization. This program allows our students to observe the most exciting changes in tourism in China, e.g., the fast expansion of the InterContinental Hotels Group and the home grown theme park development. This study abroad program helps our students better understand change and the challenges facing them in order to be better prepared for their future careers."
