UNT merchandising students conquer New York
June 20, 2011

The New York study tour (SMHM 4000) was truly a game-changer for the 40 UNT merchandising students that participated this year. Students experienced all aspects of the fashion industry including product development at Bonobos and Nine McLemore, buying at Gap, wholesale operations at Levi, visual merchandising at Mondo Mannequins, and trend forecasting at Tobe Report and WGSN. They also got a behind the scenes tour at some innovative retailers, including Nike, ABC Carpet and Home, and Bergdorf Goodman. One of the most popular appointments this year was at Google. This appointment was made possible by Merchandising Board of Governors members, Richard Last from JCPenney and David Gebhart from Global Views. "The work culture at Google was not entirely unexpected given their reputation, but the intentional camaraderie and fun built into the job made it easy to understand why this company is so successful," commented graduate student, Debbie Duncan.

A trip to New York wouldn't be complete without experiencing some of the culture for which the city is famous.  Students participated in a Foods of NY tour in Greenwich Village, saw Jersey Boys on Broadway, and visited the Alexander McQueen exhibit, Savage Beauty, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. "To see his garments and work so close, it became quite evident that Alexander McQueen is a more than a designer; he is an artist," says Mrs. Marissa Zorola, the instructor for the course.

For most students, the study tour is an opportunity to find out where they want to be in the industry and it gives them the opportunity to network in the Big Apple. Dee Wilson stated, "Many of the companies we visited in New York have internship opportunities available to our students in areas such as product development, wholesale, sales, merchandising, trend forecasting, magazines, etc." If students are thinking of doing an internship in New York, they should contact Dee Wilson, Merchandising Internship Coordinator at dee.wilson@unt.edu for more information.
