Collect, create, and contribute: We-CAN project benefits local charity

Creating meaningful experiences for undergraduate students is integral to the mission of the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management. What better way to build spirit and support the community, than through faculty and staff participation in the CAN-struction project that was held on April 19, 2011. Student teams were challenged to create designs out of food cans collected by individuals and groups. Merchandising students, Erika Raggio and Kelsey Bridges, won in the 'Dynamic Duo' category for their high heel design. The National Society of Minorities in Hospitality won the award for the 'Most Number of Cans' for their innovative pineapple design. 

 

The opportunity to contribute to the greater good is a valuable lesson for all UNT community members. "Our faculty and students really stepped up to the plate and provided an excellent example of paying it forward," says Knight, associate dean. In collaboration with a corporate sponsor, over 7,000 cans were donated to the Denton Food Center. The event, sponsored by the SMHM Undergraduate Committee, demonstrates to the UNT community and beyond that each of us CAN make a difference.
