Hospitality management graduate students present cutting-edge research
February 11, 2011

UNT hospitality management graduate students, Nancy Baldi Kidder and Jennifer Velez attended the 16th Annual Graduate Student Research Conference in Hospitality and Tourism in Houston, Texas this January.  The conference, hosted by the Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management at the University of Houston and the School of Hotel & Tourism Management at Hong Kong Polytechnic University, received over 300 abstract submissions from 30 universities and colleges across the globe.

Topics at the conference provided a forum for reporting contemporary research in hospitality and tourism with an emphasis on innovative developments in research design, data collection, and theory testing.  UNT graduate students presented the following conceptual papers highlighting industry trends from corporate responsibility to technology innovation:

  • Drivers and Thresholds for Protected Area Tourism in Costa Rica: Exploring a Socio-ecological Systems Approach (Nancy Baldi Kidder)
  • Measuring Resident Attitudes towards Voluntourism: An Analysis of the Social Exchange Theory (Nancy Baldi Kidder)
  • Tourism: A Tool for Biodiversity Conservation in the Cape Horn Region (Nancy Baldi Kidder)
  • Impact of Women's Query Formulation on Searching Satisfaction: Implications for Online Marketing in Hospitality and Tourism (Jennifer Velez)

As one of the sponsoring universities of the conference, UNT hospitality management faculty members Dr. Lisa Kennon and Dr. Zheng  (Phil) Xiang, accompanied the students.  Kennon, associate professor and SMHM graduate coordinator, notes the importance of attending conferences for professional development.  "As students interact with other faculty and graduate students around the globe, they begin to see the value of their work and how to take their research to the next level."
