Crutsinger and Harvard research team awarded Robert J. Menges Award for Outstanding Research
December 10, 2010

Dr. Christy Crutsinger, UNT professor, and Dr. Kiernan Mathews, director for the Collaborative on Academic Careers in Higher Education (COACHE ) at Harvard University recently received the Robert J. Menges Award for Outstanding Research in Educational Development. The prestigious award was presented to the research team at the Professional Occupational Development in Higher Education (POD) Conference in St. Louis on November 5, 2010 for their work "Multi-institutional Perspectives on Senior Faculty Engagement and Vitality." Unable to attend the POD conference were key team members from Harvard, Dr. Cathy Trower and Brendan Russell.

Established in 2000, the Menges award recognizes original research -- quantitative or qualitative -- that leads to systematic investigation and evidence-based conclusions related to teaching, learning, and faculty development. By collaborating with six public colleges and universities across the nation, the team conducted focus group interviews with senior faculty to determine what motivates, satisfies, and dissatisfies them. The results were used to inform the development of a pilot survey that was launched in Fall of 2010 at nine public universities across the nation.

According to Crutsinger, quality faculty members are the hallmarks of a great university. "This project has increased our understanding of what institutions, colleges, departments, and individuals can do to help senior faculty maintain momentum and have satisfying careers," says Crutsinger. "Senior faculty are indeed the cornerstone of what we do at a university- teach students, contribute to the research enterprise, and participate in important university service," she adds.

Currently, Crutsinger is serving in a dual appointment as associate dean and faculty special assistant to the provost. She works directly with Dr. Warren Burggren, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, to develop programs that ensure faculty at all levels are effective teachers and productive scholars.
