Merchandising students create buzz for sample sale
October 20, 2010

Over 600 UNT students rocked the University Union for 3:33 minutes on October 14, 2010 as they danced to Michael Jackson's 'Thriller.' The flash mob created buzz for the first-ever  sample sale sponsored by the merchandising board of governors and UNT  merchandising division. Students enrolled in ten merchandising classes were engaged throughout the process by designing promotional materials,  conducting inventory, pricing items, displaying merchandising, and acting as sales associates.  The sale, along with cash donations for board members, raised over $8,000.00 to support student professional development activities.

An industry panel,  Brand You: Creating a Remarkable Life in an Unconventional World, preceded the flash mob and sample sale, featuring board members Ruth Crowley, former vice president of consumer products for Harley-Davidson; Jennifer Millard; executive vice president of channels development for ZoomSystems in San Francisco, and Steve Woodward, senior vice president of product development for Fossil, Inc. Students were impressed with the candor and openness of the speakers throughout the two-hour session, held in the Silver Eagle Suite.  "Although they presented very different viewpoints, their overall message  was powerful," says Shelby Dryden, a merchandising freshmen. "I left this event with a great sense of optimism for my future career, and  I also realized that everything I do and say contributes to my personal brand," adds Dryden.

The 'Brand You' event demonstrates what happens when passionate industry leaders, creative faculty, and enthusiastic students converge and light up the Union with Mean Green pride.
