Start spreading the news, UNT merchandising students explore New York
July 07, 2010

For over 30 years, "I Love New York" has been the mantra for UNT merchandising students.  This year was no different for the 39 students who participated in the New York Study Tour over the maymester.  Students experienced all aspects of the fashion industry including product development, buying, visual merchandising, public relations, and trend forecasting.  Students met with industry leaders from Barney's, Diesel, Fashion Snoops, Fossil, Nike, Nina McLemore, Toys R' Us, Welltex Apparel, and Women's Wear Daily, to name a few.  A highlight of the trip for faculty leaders, Dr. Tammy Kinley and Ms. Marissa Zorola, was the opportunity to reconnect with merchandising alumni, Luis Demtri Zepeda (BS '05) and Lindsey Turner (BS '07), who are currently working in the Big Apple.

For most students, the study tour is a transformative experience. Just ask senior, Rachel Lopez, who is completing her internship this summer with Cosmopolitan magazine in New York.  "When I enrolled in this course in the summer of 2009, I had no idea that the experience would redirect my entire career," says Lopez.  For other students, the course helps them narrow their career focus.  Alexis Linthicum, a merchandising sophomore, now hopes to pursue a career in trend forecasting.  "This class really opened my eyes to the diversity of the marketplace and how trends can be spotted and predicted," says Linthicum.  Like most UNT students, she hopes to one day be a part of it -- New York, New York!
