Dallas fashion industry offers excitement and opportunity
May 13, 2010

Once upon a time graduates launching their fashion careers moved to New York or LA where the major retail stores and design houses were located.  Luckily, for UNT merchandising students there is excitement and ample opportunity right in their back door. During the spring semester, merchandising students explored innovative retail and merchandising strategies throughout the Dallas metroplex as a part of the elective course, Merchandising Study Tour.

The course, taught by Dr. Annette Burnsed, exposed students to emerging trends in consumer analytics, sensory marketing, retail-tainment, downtown revitalization, digital retail, product innovation, and global distribution. Students witnessed firsthand the merchandising process from product ideation to point of sale by engaging in executive briefings and participating in tours of several companies:

  • American Girl
  • Bass Pro Shops
  • Buxton Company
  • Denton Main Street
  • Fossil
  • Global Views
  • JCPenney
  • The Apparel Group Limited

The benefits of experiential learning are readily apparent according to merchandising senior, Tara Walker. "This course provided me with a well-rounded view of the retail sector and opened my eyes to the many career opportunities awaiting post-graduation in Dallas," she says. Be on the lookout New York and LA, the top talent from UNT may reside happily ever after in Dallas.
