Dr. Bharath Josiam strengthens partnerships with European hospitality management programs
December 18, 2009

Bharath M. Josiam, associate professor in hospitality management, recently returned from Europe where he met with faculty from the University of Surrey (UK) and the Centre for Tourism at Goteborg University (Sweden) to discuss exchange programs and potential collaborative research projects.   Like many U.S. universities, the internationalization of academic programs has been identified as a top priority for institutions of higher education across Europe, according to Josiam.  "These are exciting times to build global connections with our European partners who possess the commitment, energy, and intellectual capacity to move forward," says Josiam.

The Euro-CHRIE conference held in Helsinki, Finland was the final destination on Josiam's European visit.  Josiam presented the paper, "Taiwanese Travelers on Cruises in North America:  Comparing Involvement and Cluster Approach."  Co-authors for the project were Tai-yi Huang, Gauri Bahulkar, Daniel Spears, and Lisa Kennon.

To support this international research initiative, Josiam received a UNT Faculty  Development Leave for the Fall 2009 semester.  The competitive awards are given to faculty for the primary purpose of increasing the value of their sustained contribution to the university with an opportunity for enhanced professional growth. "I am proud to contribute to the UNT strategic goal of internationalization, and I look forward to formalizing partnerships with our hospitality management colleagues throughout Europe," says Josiam.
