Study Abroad 2009: Merchandising Students Track the Apparel Supply Chain through Global Immersion Experience
July 28, 2009

Merchandising students increased their knowledge of the global textile, apparel, and retail industries and broadened their understanding of the Chinese culture this summer. From May 27 through June 17, students enrolled in the Hong Kong / China study abroad program interacted with business executives, industry leaders, and government officials while earning academic credit. During that time, students engaged in professional appointments (e.g., U.S. Consulate, J.C. Penney Hong Kong Merchandise Testing Center, Target Sourcing Services), factory tours and briefings, and numerous cultural activities.

Participants learned first-hand about the supply chain from raw materials, fiber and fabric production, garment construction, and logistics (e.g., Yantian International Container Terminal in Shenzhen, PRC).

Additionally, students investigated differences in international retail formats as they explored product distribution in both Hong Kong and China.  To date, 200 students are alumni of this unique learning experience. Plans already are underway for Summer 2010! Please contact Dr. Dee K. Knight ( for information.
