Textiles, Tweens, and Tie-Dye, Bridging the Generation Gap One T-shirt at a Time

UNT held its first Grandparent's University (GPU), "a multi-generational learning experience," on June 25 and 26, 2009. Grandparents and their grandchildren, ages 7-12, were able to take classes and earn a GPU degree in two majors offered, including art, music, astronomy, criminal justice, and fashion merchandising. Marissa Zorola, lecturer for SMHM, served as the instructor for the merchandising major entitled "Merchandising: Technicolor Tees." The course focused on the history of clothing, the importance of fashion in the modern world, and the merchandising process. On the second class day,  students tie-dyed their own cotton shirt and silk scarf. GPU was an opportunity for grandparents and grandchildren to experience college life together. Many of the grandparents noted that the experience gave them the chance to spend some quality time with their grandchildren, learning something new together and having fun.

 

For Mrs. Zorola it was an opportunity to work with a new generation of students. "The excitement the kids showed was amazing. They were so interested and in tune to what fashion means in our daily lives. They also created some great tie-dye designs. Overall, I was impressed by their eagerness to learn about fashion." At the end of the Merchandising courses, every student was named an Honorary Member of Merchandising Inc., a UNT student organization
