Merchandising Students Rock Seventh Avenue

During the 2009 three-week summer term, 60 merchandising students participated in the New York Study Tour, the largest group of SMHM students traveling together on record.  Students experienced all aspects of the merchandising industry, including product development, showrooms, retail establishments, publication houses, trend forecasting, and more.  Highlights included stops at Harper's Bazaar, GQ, Niketown, WWD, ESP Trendlab, Tracy Reese Showroom, Diesel, Esquel Apparel Inc., and LifeStyle Visuals. During the visit to Barneys New York creative division, students were unexpectedly surprised when they were met by none other than fashion celebrity and author, Simon Doonan, Creative Director for Barneys New York. 

 

Beyond focused industry visits, students experienced the heart of the big apple by visiting the Metropolitan Museum of Art and enjoying the long-running Broadway play, Phantom of the Opera.   Lecturer, Marissa Zorola acknowledges the transformative nature of experiential learning. She notes, "The showroom visits, executive briefings, and retail tours expose students to aspects of the dynamic fashion world not readily apparent and opens many opportunities for future internships and jobs."
