UNT Events Offer Valuable Student Learning Experiences
June 04, 2009

Laurea Dunahoe (M.Ed.), Special Events Coordinator for the Office of the President and SMHM adjunct professor, takes pride in the development of student talent at UNT. Under Ms. Dunahoe's direction, hospitality management senior, Nia Benyon, is learning first hand what it takes to go above and beyond the status quo to deliver a "wow" event. Over the past year, Nia has assisted with the coordination, marketing, and management of numerous university events including the President's Leadership Series, Commencement, and, most notably, the Emerald Eagle Ball.

Like many other UNT merchandising and hospitality management students, Nia hopes to pursue a career in event management, a growing and thriving industry, when she graduates this December. Nia, a graduate of Flower Mound High School, is also completing an internship at the Royal Oaks Country Club this summer as the Youth Activities Director and assistant to the Event Coordinator. Beyond her busy work schedule, Nia is the President of Kappa Delta Gamma, Beta Chapter and Vice President of the Club Managers Association of America.  Nia's advice to other students, "To be an effective event manager, you must remain flexible because anything can change at the last minute and ALWAYS, ALWAYS wear comfortable shoes!"
