Junior Faculty Members Awarded Summer Research Grants
March 31, 2009

Junior faculty members, Jiyoung Kim, Sanjukta Pookulangara and Hyewon Youn, in the School of Merchandising and Hospitality Management, recently received intramural competitive research grants for Summer 2009.  The program, sponsored by the UNT Office of Research and Economic Development, provides summer research support for faculty early in their academic careers.

Jiyoung Kim, assistant professor in merchandising, will determine the effect of community sustainability efforts on urban consumers' shopping behavior. By surveying consumers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area, Dr. Kim will identify specific social behaviors that generate consumer interest and support. Dr. Kim, a graduate from The Ohio State University in consumer sciences, teaches fashion promotion and survey of history and contemporary styles.

Sanjukta Pookulangara, assistant professor in merchandising, will examine the influence of consumer-generated content (CGC) on consumers' purchase intention.  As more consumers use online ratings and reviews in the information search process, Dr. Pookulangara will test a theoretical model and provide practical implications for retailers as they attempt to expand their media reach. Dr. Pookulangara received her Ph.D. in Textiles and Apparel Management from the University of Missouri-Columbia and teaches visual merchandising and advanced merchandising applications.

Hyewon Youn, assistant professor in hospitality management, plans to study bankruptcy prediction of U.S. restaurant firms. Using the artificial neural networks (ANN) technique, Youn plans to develop a bankruptcy prediction model for the restaurant industry. Results will assist restaurant managers in identifying early warning signs to minimize bankruptcy risks. Dr. Youn received her Ph.D. in Hospitality Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. She teaches hospitality financial and managerial accounting.
