Ashley Kingsbury Participates in the American Collegiate Retailing Association Charrette Competition
June 02, 2008

Ashley Kingsbury, a merchandising senior, represented the University of North Texas in an international charrette competition. The event was sponsored by the American Collegiate Retailing Association and hosted by Ryerson University in Toronto, Ontario. A charrette is an intense, interdisciplinary activity in which students are placed in teams to solve a complex problem.  Ashley worked with students from Ryerson University, University of Florida, University of Kentucky, Albright College, and Georgia Southern University.

Students were challenged to design an experiential retail store for Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MSLE), targeted to be part of a large entertainment complex next to the Toronto stadium. Although Ashley’s team did not win, she acknowledges the excellent learning opportunity that she was afforded.  She states, “This was a realistic learning experience. There are no fabricated assignments in the real world, and we got to experience the pressures and rewards of working with others.” Like most university students, her favorite part of the trip was meeting and spending time with the diverse group of students from America and Canada.
