October 10, 2007

Dr. Richard Tas recently received the distinguished UNT-President's Council Teaching Award for his excellence in teaching at the University of North Texas. The monetary award was presented by Dr. Gretchen Bataille at the Fall 2007 Faculty/Staff Convocation. The President's Council Teaching Award was established to provide recognition to full-time, tenure and tenure-track faculty members for their outstanding teaching at the University of North Texas over at least a five-year period. Award recipients may use designated funds at their discretion to enhance or develop their instructional, research, or scholarly activities.

Dr. Tas, Founding Director of the Hospitality Management program at UNT, has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses for 22 years. He holds degrees in Hotel and Restaurant Administration and Institutional Administration from Oklahoma State University and Hotel Administration from Cornell University. Dr. Tas directed medical food service operations while serving in his commission in the United States Navy. His passion for teaching hospitality management is reflected in his commitment to and interest in student learning. He states, "when developing an effective classroom lesson, I remember this Chinese proverb: I hear, and I forget. I see, and I remember. I do, and I understand." Dr. Tas consistently challenges student's creativity, growth, and critical thinking.

Dr. Tas is the former recipient of the prestigious 'Fessor Graham Award, the UNT Student Association Honor Professor Award, and the UNT Pioneer for Distributed Learning Award.
