UNT student receives scholarship to attend Meeting Professionals International conference

DENTON (UNT), Texas — Allie Salgueiro of Garland, a senior hospitality and tourism management major at the University of North Texas, has received a Wyndham Worldwide WEC Scholarship that will allow her to attend the 2015 World Education Congress, the annual global conference of Meeting Professionals International. The World Education Congress will be held in San Francisco Aug. 1-4.

Meeting Professionals International was founded in 1972 to provide innovative and relevant education, networking opportunities and business exchanges for those in the global meeting and event industry. The organization also acts as a prominent voice for the promotion and growth of the industry. MPI has approximately 18,500 members belonging to more than 80 chapters and clubs in 22 nations.

Salgueiro, a 2011 graduate of Garland High School, is a student member of the Dallas-Fort Worth chapter of MPI and served as the chair for the chapter’s networking event this past March and vice chair for its luncheon in May. She has worked as a special events facilitator for the Dallas Arboretum and Botanical Garden since December 2014, overseeing events from start to finish and working with vendors, contractors and guests. She was previously a marketing intern for FC Dallas, organizing tour events in the area and assisting in game day events.

The MPI Foundation provides student scholarships to the World Education Congress based on MPI membership, grade point average, letters of recommendation and students’ essays or videos describing how MPI has influenced them and why they want to attend the annual conference. The scholarships provide more than $2,000 for conference registration, airfare and accommodations and other expenses.

Salgueiro was also chosen to attend the Future Leaders Forum on the first day of the World Education Congress. The forum, which is designed for college juniors, seniors and graduate students planning careers in the meeting and events industries, includes sessions on key topics led by industry experts, an overview of the industry, round table discussions and networking with the experts. Students who attend an MPI forum become part of the MPI’s Future Leaders Network, which provides continued career guidance and an access to peers around the world.

Before entering UNT, Salgueiro earned her associate’s degree in liberal arts from Collin College, graduating magna cum laude. She was named to Phi Theta Kappa, an academic honor society for students at two-year colleges and universities. At UNT, she has been named to the Dean’s List four times and to the President’s List twice. She will receive her bachelor’s degree next May and plans a career in sports events management and marketing.
