Oct 22, 2014

The 3rd Annual Global Symposium for Sustainable Tourism Research (GSSTR) was held on Wednesday, April 23, 2014. This year’s topic: Sustainability:  Best Practices and Developing Applications at the Community Level.

Students, hoteliers, and educators from around the world participated in UNT’s 3rd Annual Global Symposium for Sustainable Tourism Research. The virtual symposium was made available through Google Hangout with a live stream of the event on YouTube.

Representatives from Omni Hotels and Resorts and PepsiCo North America, along with UNT graduate students in the Master of Science in Sustainable Tourism (MIST) program, presented a research webinar from Costa Rica, Argentina, Panama, and the United States.

The MIST program is a joint Master of Science degree in International Sustainable Tourism between UNT and CATIE (The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) in Turrialba, Costa Rica.  Dr. Daniel Spears and Dr. Eliecer Vargas are the lead faculty of the MIST program at UNT and CATIE, repectively.

The GSSTR serves key stakeholders in the US, Costa Rica, and international partners with private and public industry involvement, community and educational engagement, and information and research dissemination through an annual digital symposium designed to examine best practices in sustainability and sustainable tourism throughout the world.

The symposium presentations highlight the impact of sustainability on the tourism industry around the world.   Dr. Dan Spears, Coordinator of the MIST Program at UNT, states, “We believe this symposium, with its focus on the social, cultural, environmental, and economic elements of sustainability, will assist current and future leaders across many backgrounds to shape the global sustainability landscape of the tourism industry.”
