May 14, 2014

The Chair of the Hospitality & Tourism Management program, Dr. Lea R Dopson, was invited to speak at The Hotel Association of Tarrant County’s (HATC) February meeting and luncheon sponsored by Yellow Cab and held at Austin Ranch (Hilton DFW Lakes).

Dr. Dopson spoke about how sustainability relates to the hospitality industry, and how the University of North Texas (UNT) is leading the way.  She discussed several initiatives on campus including the LEED certified stadium and new buildings at UNT.  Dr. Dopson also included a video showcasing UNT’s Zero Energy Lab in the College of Engineering.

The focus of Dr. Dopson’s presentation was the MS in International Sustainable Tourism (MIST) program, which is a joint degree between UNT and CATIE, Costa Rica.  MIST students attended the luncheon and were featured guests.  The MIST students were very appreciative of the warm hospitality they received from HATC members, and they were encouraged by HATC’s interest in sustainability in lodging operations, specifically.

Julie Faver-Dylla the Executive Director of the Hotel Association stated, “We were delighted to have Dr. Dopson speak to our hotel association regarding sustainable tourism.  She brought a wealth of information about UNT to the local hoteliers and did an outstanding job increasing the awareness of sustainability in the hospitality industry. “
