The Mean Green wins the Heart of Dallas Bowl
Jan 27,2014

UNT kicked off 2014 on a high note thanks to the Mean Green football team's 36-14 win over the Rebels from University of Nevada, Las Vegas, in the Heart of Dallas Bowl. For the first time in eleven years and the first time on New Year's Day in program history, the North Texas football team is a bowl champion.  "Really proud of my football team," North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. "I dreamed of a day these seniors could go to a bowl game and win a bowl game."

University of North Texas President V. Lane Rawlins and University of Nevada, Las Vegas President Neal Smatresk issued a friendly challenge to one another in advance of the Heart of Dallas bowl game. If UNT won the game, Smatresk vowed to wear UNT Mean Green gear during a meal with Rawlins at a public place. And if UNLV won, Rawlins promised to don UNLV Rebels gear for a meal with Smatresk.

The bowl game was of particular importance to Rawlins as it symbolizes significant progress for both Mean Green athletics and UNT, and it comes at the end of Rawlins’ tenure as president and his career in higher education.

UNT was the only university in the Dallas-Fort Worth area to earn a bowl invitation this year, a proud moment for the Mean Green Nation. Thousands of fans turned the Cotton Bowl and downtown Dallas into a sea of green New Year's Day. Go Mean Green!
