Linking Sustainability and Digital Retailing through Research+Collaboration+Education

The EXECUTIVE+SCHOLAR Lecture Series entitled “Pursuing Sustainability in the Global Apparel Industry:  Inspiring the Digitally Connected Consumer” will be held on Tuesday, September 24, 2013 from 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The program is hosted by the Global Digital Retailing Research Center and will feature key industry executives and university faculty presenting cutting edge information linking sustainability in the global apparel industry and digital retailing. The goal of the EXECUTIVE+SCHOLAR Lecture Series is to provide first-hand knowledge from leading professionals and researchers in educating CMHT’s students at large about concepts, trends and innovations that are impacting consumer experiences in digital environments. The inaugural event focuses on sustainability. Speakers will address aspects of three socio-economic phenomena: sustainable practices, the global nature of the apparel industry, and digitally connected businesses and consumers. Society today expects businesses to demonstrate socially responsible and sustainable practices while providing consumers with quality products, services and experiences at competitive prices. Similarly, as businesses and consumers digitally connect in real time, consumers expect to be active participants in shaping the products, services and experiences they value.

SAC HIGG Index Workshop.

Following the EXECUTIVE+SCHOLAR Lecture Series, the Center will host a two hour workshop on the HIGG Index led by members of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC). The HIGG Index is an example of how global networks are driving digitally engaged businesses and consumers in the co-creation of value related to sustainable practices. The workshop will provide an in-depth understanding of how retailers, product developers, manufacturers, and consumers can use the HIGG Index as a tool for measuring the environmental and social performance of apparel products. Workshop attendees will be limited to registered retailers, manufacturers, faculty and graduate students.

EXECUTIVE+SCHOLAR Lecture Series speakers providing a global view of the industry include:

Delman Lee, Ph.D., President and Chief Technology Officer of TAL Apparel Ltd. Hong Kong. He is responsible for driving TAL's long-term strategy in operations, technology and value-added services to customers. Dr. Lee holds the Ph.D. from the University of Oxford, served three years as a researcher at UK based Sharp Laboratories of Europe, and was a research fellow at the University of Pennsylvania in the U.S. and the University of Leeds in the U.K. Dr. Lee and TAL Apparel Ltd. is a founding member of the Sustainable Apparel Coalition.

TAL Apparel Ltd. is a leading manufacturer of the world’s top apparel and retail brands. The company is committed to investing in research and development that provides a technological edge in enhanced performance garments. TAL received the 2012 Sustainability All Star Awards from Apparel Magazine for its efforts to reduce the company’s environmental footprint and incorporate green building design into its factories.


Ryan Young, Vice President, Index. Ryan has a background in management and strategy consulting, with a focus on sustainability since 2008. Ryan was with Blu Skye Sustainability Consulting from 2008-2011, where he worked closely with the U.S. dairy industry on greenhouse gas reduction efforts. Ryan earned his BA in Economics from Cornell University and his MBA in Strategy and Marketing from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business. He has also taught an MBA class in sustainable marketing at Golden Gate University in San Francisco. He works closely with SAC Members and other stakeholders to develop and strengthen the Higg Index as a tool for evaluating sustainability that leads to meaningful change.




Todd Copeland, Environmental Product Specialist for Patagonia, is responsible for researching and assessing the environmental impacts of the company’s products and making recommendations toward continuous improvement. Over the past seven years, he has helped Patagonia choose environmentally preferred materials, eliminate toxic chemicals, and take end-of-life responsibility for products. His current focus is implementing the Higg Index into the Company.

Patagonia is a brand/retailer of outdoor sports apparel and a leader in sustainable practices. The Patagonia website offers insight into sustainable product claims as well as extensive information on environmental and social responsibility within the company and throughout the supply chain. Highlights include the Common Threads Partnership for extended product responsibility. The Footprint Chronicles supply chain map, the detailed Corporate Responsibility page, the Environmental Grants program, and Our Common Waters campaign. The website includes “The Cleanest Line” blog and connections to social media. Patagonia is a founding member of the SAC.


Dr. Jiyoung Kim. Assistant Professor of Merchandising and Digital Retailing, University of North Texas, blends her passion for social responsibility, sustainability and digital consumer behavior into a research stream that has produced 11 refereed research articles and 22 research presentations. She also teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in sustainable apparel. Dr. Kim holds the Ph.D. in Consumer Science from The Ohio State University.
