2nd Annual Global Symposium for Sustainable Tourism Research.
July 11, 2013

Students, hoteliers, and educators from around the world participated in the UNT 2nd Annual Global Symposium for Sustainable Tourism Research.  General Managers from Four Season’s hotels and UNT graduate students in the Master of Science in Sustainable Tourism (MIST) program presented a research webinar from Ireland, Italy, Costa Rica, Virgin Islands, England, Canada, Mexico, and Texas.

The MIST program is a joint Master of Science degree in International Sustainable Tourism between UNT and CATIE (The Tropical Agricultural Research and Higher Education Center) in Turrialba, Costa Rica.  Dr. Daniel Spears and Dr. Eliecer Vargas, lead faculty of the MIST program at UNT and CATIE, respectively, moderated the full day symposium.  The virtual symposium took place April 24, 2013 and was made available through Google Hangout with a live stream of the event on You Tube, with over 135 students, hoteliers, and educators in attendance.

The symposium presentations highlighted practices of sustainability used in the hospitality industry around the world.  “Research doesn’t mean anything unless it is supported by the hospitality industry, policy makers, government institutions, and local community,” stated Dr. Vargas.  Graduate students and industry professionals discussed topics such as sustainable tourism development within a destination, community involvement in sustainable efforts, certification strategies, and green practices in the hospitality industry.
