Shop.Org Summit in Denver Peaks MDR Students’ Interest in Digital Retailing
Dec 03, 2012

Students eligible for participation in this event competed for travel grants by submitting applications and an essay.  Five students were selected by faculty to attend.  The travel grants are funded through proceeds of the annual MDR Sample Sale.  Attending this year were graduate students - Jessica Burton, Hannah Hillikar, Lauren Vasquez, and Kirsten Key and undergraduate Avery Davis.  They were accompanied by Richard Last, the program coordinator for the Digital Retailing degree.  Students indicated that this experiential learning opportunity allowed them to be immersed in rich content regarding the digital retailing sector, explore the many e-commerce companies, and meet and network with company executives.

Students attended the daily keynote events as well as many of the breakout sessions where they learned about topics including entry mode strategies into international markets and ways that retailers are using omni channel.  Students can take the information learned at the event and apply it directly into current course content.  Students indicated that they were fascinated to hear from prominent companies regarding their latest research findings and recent developments. Hearing directly from leaders of companies including Nordstrom, Marks & Spencer, Toys “R” Us, H&M and Neiman Marcus and how they are continuously evolving in the digital arena was inspiring to the students. Meeting many of the industry professional was also incredibly exciting.  Students gained insights into the dramatic speed of innovation in the industry, the substantial growth of mobile buying, merchandising is the core skill in retailing, that companies must have a multi-channel evolution, and retail means jobs, careers and innovation.

These students are also members of the NRFSA – National Retailing Student Association which holds regular meetings on campus.  The Digital Retailing degree is the only one of its kind in the U.S.
