Eta Sigma Delta Hospitality Honor Society Awarded Chapter of Distinction for 2011-2012
Oct 22, 2012

The University of North Texas (UNT) chapter of Eta Sigma Delta (ESD) was honored in August with a national Chapter of Distinction Award for 2011-2012. ESD is an international honor society with over 60 chapters that recognizes exceptional academic achievement among hospitality and tourism students at the baccalaureate and masters level. It is administered by the International Council on Hotel, Restaurant and Institutional Education (I-CHRIE), the leading international association devoted to hospitality and tourism education.

UNT’s ESD award is attributed to its highly active membership last year who advanced the society’s five pillars:  excellence, leadership, creativity, service, and ethics.  During the 2011-2012 academic year, ESD members tutored their fellow hospitality management students, attended numerous trade shows to represent the Hospitality and Tourism Management program, and volunteered at several major school events including the new Marriott Culinary Lab Dedication Ceremony in April of this year. UNT has a large chapter with over 60 members, who are students that represent the top 20% in their class and have earned GPAs of 3.25 and higher.

The International ESD Board of Governors may select up to three chapters per year for the prestigious Chapter of Distinction Award.  UNT shared this achievement with only one other chapter from Washington State University.  About the student s in these chapters Professor Melissa Dallas, Chair of the International Board of Governors of Eta Sigma Delta applauded, “They are award-winning scholars who will undoubtedly have a positive impact on the hospitality industry in the near future.” She also stated, “Eta Sigma Delta is a testament to the dedication of both students and professionals in hospitality and tourism to the pursuit of academic, professional, and personal excellence.”

Dr. Lea Dopson, Chair of the UNT Hospitality and Tourism Management program and ESD Chapter Advisor, commented on the award proudly saying, “The students really deserve this prestigious award.  They worked tirelessly all year to tutor their fellow students in difficult classes, represent the Hospitality and Tourism Management program at national trade shows, and volunteer their time to support industry events on campus.  They truly exhibited the ESD pillars of excellence, leadership, creativity, service, and ethics this past year.”

Congratulations to the UNT Chapter of Eta Sigma Delta for your dedication and excellence to the advancement of hospitality and tourism education!
