Oct 22, 2012

Twenty nine UNT hospitality students exhibiting at the Southwest Foodservice Expo at the Dallas Convention Center in June indulged in a special treat while there; quality time with celebrity Chef Johnny Carino.

Chef Carino engaged with students one-on-one at the UNT booth for more than two hours, discussing the students’ career aspirations. He offered advice on how to stay current in the changing market so, as graduates, they could be competitive. He told stories about his rise to success, answering questions for students and offering tips that he discovered along the way. He also talked with the students about key skills to begin building in order to be successful including networking, marketing, and drive.

A welcomed mentor for the day, Chef Carino shared his insights; reaching out to students in industry. "In this industry you have to believe in what you’re doing each and every day. Passion breathes life and love into your food and your audience can taste it!” Also stressing the importance of cost controls, he stated that "in order to run a successful business you have to understand the numbers."

Hospitality undergraduate, Marco Arcé, commented, “This is my first time at a show like this; talking with Chef Johnny Carino was an incredible experience. He is a bundle of knowledge about foodservice and the [hospitality] industry. We are so privileged to discuss in depth about our futures and get feedback from such a big name in industry.”

Before leaving the students, Johnny Carino shared one last piece of advice, "Don’t be afraid to make mistakes; sometimes they are where the best ideas come from!"
