The Merchandising and Digital Retailing Department is comprised of four programs: B.S. in Merchandising, B.S. in Home Furnishings Merchandising, B.S. in Digital Retailing and an M.S. in Merchandising. Even though these are four distinctively different programs, there are a number of elements that cross all programs.
Department Mission: Developing talent for careers in the trend-driven global marketplace. The mission embraces:
Merchandising is an exciting and challenging field with national and international career opportunities in fashion-related textile, apparel, and home furnishings industries. Known for innovative programming and quality research, Merchandising and Digital Retailing faculty members work closely with Dallas-Fort Worth industry executives to ensure the UNT program meets the evolving needs of this fast-paced field. The JCPenney lecture series brings top level executives to campus and area experts are frequent guest lecturers in classrooms. In addition, professional development events such as the annual Merchandising Expo, bring recruiters from major retail, fashion, home furnishings and e-commerce companies to highlight career opportunities.
Students in merchandising majors also have the opportunity to participate in Merchandising Inc., and the National Retailing Federation Student Association. Both organizations help students establish industry contacts and enhance their professional development and are open to any major in the department.
To recognize students’ scholastic achievements, scholarships are available to MDR majors. They are awarded on the basis of academic excellence, articulation of professional goals, and, for some scholarships, financial need.
